Under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), the Government of India has started this Janani Suraksha Yojana to reduce the mortality rate of poor pregnant women and their newborn children in our country. This Janana Suraksha Yojana was started by our Honorable Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 12th April 2005. This scheme has been implemented in every state and union territory of the country.

According to this scheme, poor pregnant women from every state of the country will get the benefit of this scheme. This Janani Suraksha Yojana has appointed village Anganwadi workers and ASHA workers to reach the women of every village.

Role of Anganwadi worker and Asha worker:

  1. Identify pregnant women: To identify pregnant women for this scheme.

2. Assist this pregnant woman: To assist this pregnant woman in obtaining the necessary certificates.

3. Help for Health Checkups: Helping the beneficiary pregnant woman to get at least three free ANC checkups.

4. Help for Health Checkups: Helping pregnant women get TT injections and IFA tablets.

5. Help for Health Vaccines: Helping pregnant women to register in government health centers.

6. Hospital Reservation of pregnant woman: Reservation of pregnant woman for delivery in a government health center or selected private health center.

7. Go with Pregnant Women: Take the pregnant woman to the pre-determined health center for delivery and stay with her till discharge after delivery.

8. Help the newborn baby: Help the newborn baby to heal up to 14 weeks.

9. Reporting New Births & Deaths: Give information about births and deaths of mothers and children to the ANM/MO office.

10. Encourage breastfeeding: Encourage the woman to breastfeed her newborn baby.

11. Guide to Pregnant Women: The beneficiary should guide the woman in family planning for the next 6 months.

Benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana:

  1. Free Health Checkup: According to this scheme, three prenatal checkups of pregnant women will be done for free.

2. Cash Assistance: The beneficiary pregnant woman will receive cash assistance of Rs.1500/- from the government.

3. Free Pregnant Delivery: Under this scheme, delivery of pregnant women will be done free of cost.

4. Free health Care for Newborn babies: The newborn baby will be provided free health care for ten months.

5. Help from Anganwadi or Asha workers: Anganwadi workers or Asha workers will help pregnant women avail themselves of the benefits of this scheme before and after delivery.

6. Honorarium to Anganwadi or Asha workers: Through this scheme, Anganwadi or Asha workers will get cash assistance of Rs. 5000/- in the form of a starting fund from the government.

Eligibility for Janani Suraksha Yojana:

  1. Residency: For this scheme, the pregnant woman must be a permanent citizen of our country.

2. BPL Card Holder Must: A pregnant woman must be a BPL cardholder.

3. Age Limit: For this scheme, the pregnant woman must be 19 years of age.

4. Benefits Only Two Children: The benefit of this scheme is limited to two children only for women.

5. Registration Must: The woman who gets registration for this Janani Suraksha Yojana will get the benefit of this scheme.

6. Give birth in a Private or Government Hospital: Only those pregnant women who give birth in a government health center or a selected private health center will get the benefit of this scheme.

The application process for Janani Suraksha Yojana:
  1. Visit Website: First, the applicant has to go to the government’s official website of Janani Suraksha Yojana

2. Find Application Form: After that, an application form will open in front of you.

3. Fill up the Application Form: In this form, information like full name, gender, date of birth, mobile number, residential address, state, Aadhaar number, etc. of the pregnant woman has to be filled in correctly.

4. Upload Documents: After that the necessary documents have to be uploaded.

5. Final Submission: Finally, tick the declaration and click on submit.
